Is there anyway to use this theme without changing my permalink structure?

This would be very problematic for me as my site is not a new blog.

    Thanks.

    Hi GRX3,

actually its not possible to avoid E2′s requested permalink structure. have you considered using a redirection plugin to generate 301 jumps to the new links?

Will the new Cluster one theme also require permalinks to be changed?

Nope, also the actual C1 version supports static links, here’s a site running with C1 with standard link structure and C1:

please let us know if you want to switch your account to C1, we’ll be glad to do it for free.

I think I will have to switch to C1 as I don’t want hashbang urls. Other than the way the posts load, what are the differences between E2 and C1 in terms of features? I’m not seeing any text only posts in the C1 demos, is this not supported?

Text posts are supported aswell, the main layout difference is the expanded post method. In E2 it loads in the grid while C1 loads the expanded post on top of the grid. Please drop us a mail here and we’ll be glad to switch you to C1.
